However, flashbacks detailing his past reveal a more sensitive side to Sawyer, as he is shown to have been betrayed and abandoned by those he loved. Over the course of the series, Sawyer undergoes a significant transformation, becoming a more heroic and selfless figure. He sacrifices his chance to get off the Island so his friends can escape, and in the fifth season, he quickly acclimates to his new role as the leader of the remaining survivors. When the survivors are sent back through time, Sawyer falls in love and forms a stable relationship with Juliet Burke. In the series finale, Sawyer moves onto the afterlife with Juliet, having finally found peace and happiness.
