Zwarte Piet Zwarte Piet, also known as Black Pete, is the companion of Saint Nicholas in the folklore of the Low Countries. He is typically depicted as a black Moor from Spain, and those portraying the traditional version of the character usually put on blackface and colourful Renaissance attire in addition to curly wigs and bright red lipstick. However, the character has become increasingly controversial in recent years, and a revised version, dubbed Sooty Piet, has become more common at public events.
