Ish-bosheth Ish-bosheth (Hebrew: אִישׁ־בֹּשֶׁת‎, romanized: ʼĪš-bōšeṯ, "man of shame"), also called Eshbaal (אֶשְׁבַּעַל‎, ’ Ešba ‘ al; alternatively spelled Ishbaal, "fire of Baal") was the second monarch of the Kingdom of Israel. He succeeded his father, Saul, and reigned for two years. During his reign, he was at war with David, who eventually succeeded him as king. Ish-bosheth was killed by two of his own army captains.
